Strobe lights flashing, bass thumping, and fists thrusting in the air like we just don’t care. Welcome to the Red Bull Thre3style, an international DJ competition taking Chicago by storm this weekend. For the past few weeks, qualifying rounds were held in eighteen countries to bring the best to the Midwest, where only one DJ will remain spinning at the end. Chicago has a storied history of being the Mecca for blues, jazz, and hip hop music—and now house music too.
Last night DJs from Chile, Netherlands, South Korea, and the US battled it out to be named the best of the night. Each DJ has fifteen minutes to blend music from at least three genres and win over the crowd, while simultaneously demonstrating their technical skills. Crowd participation is huge—if the people aren’t jamming, you can bet the judges aren’t feeling it either. DJ Drummer from Chile took first place for the night, moving on in the competition continuing this weekend. A nod to South Korean DJ Pandol who incorporated recent hit Gangnam Style into his set.
I have been stretching out my Jersey Shore fist pumping arm, practicing my sick (mostly embarrassing) dance moves, and hydrating like crazy in preparation for the remaining nights of the competition leading up to the world finals this Saturday. I fully plan to follow the wise words of DMX: lose my mind, go all out, act a fool, and lose my cool. And I recommend you do the same and join me at the Red Bull Thre3style this weekend.
